What did we consult on?
We consulted on three specific areas:
• Smoking Cessation (help giving up smoking before surgery)
• Weight management (help with losing weight before surgery)
• Whether specific treatments or procedures should be available on a routine or exceptional basis only
Case for Change
As part of our commitment to quality and better outcomes for patients, Greenwich CCG is reviewing its clinical policies in the light of current clinical (medical) evidence and the experience from other CCGs. CCGs across the country are also reviewing their policies.
The cost of hospital care referrals, increasing demand, and pressures to meet targets, means that the thresholds for a referral for planned (elective) surgery need to be as based on evidence that they are effective. Certain procedures are now considered to have limited clinical value but are still known to be taking place, such as tonsillectomies
We also know that our lifestyle choices can affect our health and in turn, our lives as well as the NHS budget. Good physical health and fitness before surgery can reduce the risks of complications after major elective surgery, shorten the length of unnecessary hospital admission and help patients recover better.
Greenwich CCG is facing a very challenging financial position with a large deficit. The proposals under public consultation could amount to savings of up to £500,000; and will help ensure the CCG maximises the use of its budget allocation. More information is available in the full public consultation document.
